Tell us a little about your background in design
I studied aerospace engineering and worked at some stations mainly in the technical field. For several years, I have been heading the Interior Solutions team at Aero-Dienst. The interior projects show again and again how important the technical background is, because design still follows function – because we want design to be realizable.

How would you describe your personal design style?
Functional and individual – this is how I would describe the style that is important to me. I combine the aesthetic design aspect with the technically sensible and feasible.

Where does your design inspiration come from?
I get my inspiration from various areas – be it current trends in the automotive industry, the yacht industry, or architecture … inspiration is everywhere!

In what direction do you feel that design is moving towards in a general sense?
In my view, there is currently a trend towards “sustainability”. Materials and manufacturing processes are increasingly being selected in a sustainable manner and with environmental protection aspects in mind. In addition, there has long been a tendency towards straight lines and angular shapes – no frills or curves are used. Warm, natural colours and material are also in vogue.

Name five key themes to consider when approaching design in 2020 and beyond.
Sustainability
Individuality
Functionality
3D Print
New production methods lead to new possibilities

If you could offer one piece of advice when it comes to design schemes, what would it be?
Listen to the customer

How important are The International Yacht & Aviation Awards?
This event offers many ideas and inspirations within a short time and in a small space. It allows me to see design trends from other areas and to use them for my own work.

What projects are you currently working on?
In a very exciting and challenging project, the owner gave us greater freedom – we were able to realize our own designs and ideas. For example, we modified the wooden elements in the aircraft cabin and reworked them to a high-gloss piano lacquer finish. To give the seats a modern look, we redesigned the seats and the seat foam. We also covered the cabin linings with new individual fabrics and reworked the galley. In the galley, among other things, the Tambour Door wood elements were replaced by stainless steel elements to create a noble and unique look.

What are your aims and goals for the next twelve months?
To make the best out of the current situation and to incorporate the advantages resulting from it into future design projects.

Final thoughts; tell us a little more about yourself and your daily inspirations:

Your most treasured possession?
Traveling – every single experience I have gained through my many journeys in the past.

Your favourite holiday destination?
Places where people live together open minded and peacefully. I also like to travel individually and down-to-earth with my motorhome enjoying the freedom that can be experienced through this kind of travelling.

Your favourite hotel, restaurant & bar?
I am a friend of Indian cuisine, although I prefer small personal restaurants, bars and hotels. Here the personal contact with the guests and the staff is the focus.

Your favourite book, film & song?
Since I am a child of the 80s, the Star Wars saga is at the top of the list of my favorite movies. What’s interesting are the different characters and the multitude of creatures that are exclusively born out of the director’s imagination. Furthermore, it was still very challenging in these times to realize the special effects.

Your favourite food and drink?
Indian cuisine, but in summer I also enjoy barbecues with friends and family.

Your favourite way to spend an afternoon?
Travel in the countryside by motorhome and slow down – and to be inspired by nature.

If you weren’t a designer, what would you be?
Traveller, Explorer
