Tell us a little about your background in design
So I took a slightly unusual route into design, before setting up the studio in 2010, I graduated with a Masters in Economics from Edinburgh University and initially worked in the Financial Services industry as an analyst at Citigroup in London and then as a senior associate at a multi-billion dollar New York based hedge fund.
Although this is not your standard route into design, this experience has been key to the project, budget and relationship management aspects which are essential in any successful design project.
How would you describe your personal design style?
The studio is best known for combining contemporary and classic furniture, creating a sense of evolution over time and providing unique, multi-layered designs with depth and interest.
Having said that, I believe understanding and interpreting the client’s vision should always be the priority – every design should complement their personality and lifestyle.
Where does your design inspiration come from?
I was lucky enough to have a childhood split between England and Jamaica – and have since travelled extensively throughout the world drawing multiple design influences along the way. I think the most interesting designs should reflect your personality and experiences.
In what direction do you feel that design is moving towards in a general sense?
I see it moving towards more natural materials and textures and a focus on wellbeing.
Name five key themes to consider when approaching design in 2020 and beyond.
- Wellbeing
- Natural materials
- Focus on the environment
- Focus on longevity
- Ignore all themes and focus on a design that works for you!
If you could offer one piece of advice when it comes to design schemes, what would it be?
Consider combining elements from different eras to avoid one dimensional designs and instead help create multi-layered designs with depth and interest.
How important are The International Design & Architecture Awards?
They are “The” design and architecture awards – Simple as that.
