Tell us a little about your background in design (education, experience, etc)
As I liked to paint as child, I studied during my primary and high school at the special art school. My dream had always been to study either art or architecture, and I went on to study architecture at the Czech technical university. During this time, I received a lot of student awards, one for my project of the hotel Forum Prague. At the start of my professional carrier I started on this project, which was completed in 1987. In 1989 I established my company Ivo Nahálka – ARCHINA. Over more than 35 years, I have designed close to 100 projects, from which 70 have been completed.
How would you describe your personal interior design style?
Architecture is the mother of all artistic disciplines, and therefore creating the beauty in architecture is the main role in my projects, same in interior design. The main source of inspirations for me is the universe and nature of our beautiful planet. Beside of this, each project is for me an opportunity to create a unique design, having relations to location, its history, reflecting the type of use and building. As a result, my interior design work with each project is a different style. My personal style is to create such interior, where most people will feel good and like to return.
Where does your design inspiration come from?
My basic source of inspiration is the Universe and nature (flora and fauna) on our Planet. For a concrete project it is the history of the place, its surrounding area and buildings. Personally I like the period of Art Deco as the lifestyle.
In what direction do you feel that design is moving towards in a general sense?
During last few decades, most architecture styles have focussed too much on being minimalistic and technical ones. I have a lot of positive feedback on my projects from many people, therefore I feel that the future of such design will be popular, having a spirit of Beauty, colours and details, making people happier and relaxed.
Name five key themes to consider when approaching design in 2020 and beyond.
Key themes for me are always in each design.
- Inspiration in nature form – fauna, flora and geometry
- Use of colours to their quality
- Oval shapes of each part of interior/architecture
- Feng shui principals
- Geometrical proportions
