Tell us a little about your background in design
I just celebrated my 29th anniversary with Garrett Leather.  My education was in International Business, however working at Garrett Leather has opened up the world of design.  Most of my experience is in collaborating with aviation designers.

How would you describe your personal design style?
My personal style is definitely contemporary.  A blend of the latest look, with a touch of classic.

Where does your design inspiration come from?
My inspiration comes from a number of sources, but I do appreciate the styles of Jeremiah Brent (clean lines, almost minimalist in some respects), and Eric Kuster (love his use of rich, earth-tone metallics).

In what direction do you feel that design is moving towards in a general sense?
It seems that the contemporary look is fairly popular at the moment.  We all want to move forward, and be on trend, but it’s also nice to have a vintage accent to remind us of the past and where we’ve come from.

Name five key themes to consider when approaching design in 2020 and beyond.
– Soft shadows and layers:  Grays and neutrals are still “in”.  Very dark accents.
– Touches of metallic in varying shades to create layers.
– A naval look:  Deep rich blues balanced with light or deep rich woods.
– Organic designs.
– Designs incorporating natural elements.

If you could offer one piece of advice when it comes to design schemes, what would it be?
Don’t overcomplicate it.

What was your favourite project to work on and why?
My favorite project was a quick turn custom color match for a VVIP client.  The colors the client selected were unique, but worked perfectly in the interior scheme and were what the client truly wanted.  We were able to produce several samples, to confirm the client’s decision, and then push production through quickly to meet the fabricator’s tight schedule.  The client was very pleased with the end result.

What was your most challenging project to work on and why?
Recently, the most challenging project I worked on was with a client who was matching an existing installation.   The colour was difficult to match, as the installation was several years old and the colour had patinaed and the lustre had changed.   We worked through several iterations to find the right tone and obtain customer approval.

Which products/services could you not live without when designing?
Leather, of course, is my “go to”.  It’s natural, and brings a tactile warmth to any project.  Additionally, it’s enduring, lasting for years, and developing character as it ages.

How important are The International Yacht & Aviation Awards?
These awards are a feather in one’s cap within the industry.  The recognition that comes with receiving an IY&A award is invaluable.

What projects are you currently working on?
We’ve been working on quite a few quilted projects recently.  The trend, which crossed over from the automotive industry a few years back, seems to be still be very popular.

What are your aims and goals for the next twelve months?
I hope to find some sort of “normal” in every day, as well as work life. Unsure if our old idea of “normal” can ever be achieved again, so best to work on a new one.

Final thoughts; tell us a little more about yourself and your daily inspirations:

Your most treasured possession?
My family & friends.  They aren’t possessions, but I am blessed to have them in my life.

Your favourite holiday destination?
Anywhere with few people and wide-open spaces.

Your favourite hotel, restaurant & bar?
My favorite local restaurant is Siena in Buffalo NY.  Exceptional food and an absolutely charming wait staff.  My favourite hotel is La Barchessa di Villa Pisani… just wonderful.

Your favourite book, film & song?
Sarah’s Key (book) has always stayed with me.   It’s a very moving story.

Your favourite food and drink?
The best food is anything I cannot make at home.
