design et al are delighted to announce that SHH have been shortlisted for Interior Design Scheme – UK Award in The International Design & Architecture Awards 2019.
Belgravia House is a stunning and modern refurbishment of a classic Grade I Listed Georgian property. The brief for SHH was to extend and refurbish this 18th Century property, transforming it into a beautiful contemporary home. Located on the Grosvenor Estate in one of London’s most prestigious postcodes, a sensitive approach was paramount both in preserving the history of the building itself and in response to its surroundings. This then had to be balanced with the need to deliver the amenities befitting a luxury, modern home.
One of the most unusual features of the refurbished property is the mews staircase and a stunning glass lift, which required a significant amount of technical skill, attention and sensitivity from the engineers, architects and contractors involved. The lift sits with within a metal lattice open shaft and runs between floors within a tapered cantilevered stone staircase hand carved by Ian Knapper.
The ground floor houses an inviting entrance lobby with a stunning stone floor by Livra UK and lighting by Charles Edwards, which draws you into a receiving room dressed in cool shades of blue and grey, with Fox Linton demilune sofas and soft fabrics by Zimmer & Rohde. There is also a garden room reception and a stunning orangery. The garden room features an extraordinary rug by Elizabeth Ashard with furniture elements by Louis Montrose and a striking light installation designed by Baroncelli and SHH.
The first floor contains the formal reception room, a large formal dining room and a study. The reception is a masterclass in understated elegance and uses a combination of key pieces by Amy Sommerville and bespoke items designed by SHH with fabrics principally by JAB Anstoetz, Bart Halpern and Dedar. The dining room, which has a bespoke dining table for 24 guests, was designed by SHH and beautifully brought to life by Archer & Smith, with a fabulous rug by Matthew Wailes and chandeliers by Art et Floritude.
The Pool features include a swimming flow generator and jacuzzi outlets and a floor that rises to any specified height or to completely hide the water, providing another dining area for up to 70 people, or even a party room with dance floor. The ceiling has a dynamic LED grid behind a stunning roof light manufactured by Dernier & Hamlyn to provide animated lighting according to the guest’s requirements.
The design balances the old and the new beautifully. The interiors and finishes are sophisticated and elegant, and to the highest standard. They are modern and relevant with references to the classical detailing of the Grade I Listed elements.
