design et al are delighted to announce that SHH have been shortlisted for Luxury Residence – Global Award in The International Design & Architecture Awards 2019.
Belgravia House is a stunning and modern refurbishment of a classic Grade I Listed Georgian property. The brief was to extend and refurbish this 18th Century property, transforming it into a beautiful contemporary home. Located on the Grosvenor Estate in one of London’s most prestigious postcodes, a sensitive approach was paramount both in preserving the history of the building itself and in response to its surroundings. This then had to be balanced with the need to deliver the amenities befitting a luxury, modern home.
The main house is 23,000 sq. ft and comprises six floors, consisting of the formal reception areas, dining room and bedrooms; a mews house at the back has three bedrooms and living rooms; as well as a lower ground and basement living area and spa, which connects both buildings on several levels throughout the home.
SHH were selected to provide a turnkey service (Architecture, Interiors & FF&E) over five years, between 2012 and 2017, which included full listed planning, upgrades to a connected mews house, a double basement extension as well as complete furniture, fixtures and equipment (FF&E) design and installation, and dressing of the home. Through such a comprehensive role, the client could depend on SHH for a seamless process and a holistic approach to any challenges faced along the way, including those often posed by listed buildings.
As a result of the complexity of the project, extensive liaison and communication with the client as well as a proactive and highly professional approach was needed. SHH developed a comprehensive programme that tracked every stage and ensured close attention to detail in all aspects of the design and implementation, with minimal scope for error.
Belgravia House is located on Belgrave Square, one of the grandest and largest 19th-century squares in London. It is steeped in history as are the listed buildings that surround it. Being sensitive to this richness provided the opportunity to enhance the design of the house, with a respectful and sophisticated approach.
