Shortlisted: Alaya Ubud in the International Hotel & Property Awards 2014

Alaya Ubud in Bali, Indonesia, has been shortlisted in the ‘Hotel Design Award- Asia-Pacific’ category, new to the International Hotel & Property Awards this year.

The project is a modern interpretation of Bali local building culture; a boutique resort to enjoy quality relaxation in a stylish environment surrounded by natural beauty.

Alaya Room

Alaya Ubud was designed exclusively by Grounds Kent Architects (GKA), an award-winning company. Different kinds of indigenous materials have been used both structurally and aesthetically resulting in a concept that is attuned to the surrounding environment.  There is also a playful use of bamboo throughout the entire property along with innovative examples of island-inspired artistry.

DaLa Spa and Petani restaurant at Alaya Ubud have been expertly styled by Moroccan-born interior decorator Zohra Boukhari. She has been working in Bali for the past 12 years and is known for her use of rich textiles, vintage-inspired furnishings and mood-enhancing lighting. Zohra travels extensively for hospitality projects all over the world. Together with her husband, she is co-founder and designer of Shahinaz Collection, specialising in soft furnishings.

The landscape at Alaya Ubud is the work of Made Wijaya, Bali’s very own authority on tropical gardens. He has executed a simple design with random plantings of native Balinese flora together with artistic outdoor elements. It is a concept that does not detract from the gentle beauty of the neighbouring rice terrace. There is no outer fence to hinder the views of this natural setting. Guests can experience the wonders of nature as the adjacent field changes from a rich shade of green to gold with each passing season.
