Congratulations to SONA shortlisted for Home Cinema Award in The International Design and Architecture Awards 2019

design et al are delighted to announce that SONA have been shortlisted for Home Cinema Award in The International Design and Architecture Awards 2019.

An incredible private home cinema located in the basement of this converted vicarage provides a luxurious and indulgent space to switch off from the world and relax with friends and family to enjoy the latest movies, television and sporting events with ultra-high definition images and immersive audio.

As part of a whole home technology installation, SONA were asked to create a dedicated home cinema in the basement of this private home, which is located in a separate building to the main home.  This room was completely empty, with bare brick walls and ceilings when the project was started, and alongside the interior designer SONA were tasked with designing, detailing and delivering a room where the family and their friends could escape with the very latest movies and programmes.

It was important that the room felt luxurious yet comfortable and a place where the family could truly switch off the real world for a couple of hours.  The property is an old vicarage with a timeless decor, and although the cinema is state of the art, the technology needed to be subtle in its’ appearance, yet not in its’ performance. SONA created custom framed poster print Artcoustic Speakers that were designed specifically for this family cinema room with posters from iconic films such as Pulp Fiction, Return of the Jedi and Gatsby. An illuminated, coffered ceiling featuring acoustic stretched material provides visual interest above the seating and allowed the ceiling speakers to be completely invisible and incorporate acoustic treatment.

SONA designers started by creating computer drawings of the floor, walls and ceiling, before positioning seating, speakers and screen to meet industry and technical specifications.  This particular cinema features a Dolby Atmos, immersive audio system, with speakers located around the room on the walls, and above the room in the ceiling.  To ensure the very best performance and that the system can recreate the most accurate three-dimensional soundstage, placement of the speakers is critical.  SONA designed all the panelling and framework designs and drawings, all of which were then hand-built in situ.
