Tell us a little about your background in design (education, experience, etc)
I studied design and styling before starting my career as a junior for an interior design company. I have been working as a designer for the past 20 years.
How would you describe your personal interior design style?
I have a very varied style as I need to be able to design to all tastes. I do like to use an eclectic mix when using furniture and fabrics and I like to work with contrasting textures in soft furnishings.
Where does your design inspiration come from?
It can start with a particular item such as a wallpaper, fabric or lamp or from a country. Recently I have been drawn to the American New England Beach style.
In what direction do you feel that design is moving towards in a general sense?
I think people are looking for comfort and practicality, it’s not just about the latest trend it’s also about longevity.
Name five key themes to consider when approaching design in 2013 and beyond.
Natural woods in soft bleached colours
Bright accent colours like coral, turquoise and canary yellow
Geometric prints
Trompe l’oeil wallpapers and fabrics
Mixing styles
If you could offer one piece of advice when it comes to interior design schemes, what would it be?
The layout of a room is extremely important. The way the furniture is positioned can make a huge difference to a design, if it doesn’t flow or if it is not functional it will not work.
How important are The International Design and Architecture Awards as recognition of talent and achievement?
The International Design and Architecture awards recognise achievement within our industry. Whilst acclaim and positive response from our clients is important, the ultimate accolade is the recognition that comes from those people that truly understand the challenges we all face in our work.
