Surrey Renovation by Annabelle Holland Design

Annabelle Holland Design have been shortlisted for Residential £2.5-5 Million (Property Value) Award in The International Design & Architecture Awards 2020.

This project involved the complete renovation of a family home in Surrey for wine loving owners and their growing family. The design brief for Annabelle Holland Design was to provide a complete redesign of the house, the roof being the only thing remaining in place, every other aspect of the house was changed, including the walls and floor level.

The clients desired to bring in as much light as possible into the house and create a modern, inviting yet practical space for a growing family. The house needed to work equally well for day to day family life as well as large scale entertaining, with the wine collection taking centre stage. This required a blend of open plan formal spaces, cosy family spaces and child friendly areas. The clients also wanted their master bedroom and bathroom to be a child-free haven with their own sitting room and walk in wardrobe and for the children’s rooms to reflect their individual characters.

Part of the brief was to make the most of the newly landscaped garden views, to achieve this Annabelle Holland Designs changed the orientation of the rooms and created floor to ceiling sliding windows to bring the outside in and enable outdoor living in the warmer months.

One of the key elements of the brief was to make the owner’s wine collection take centre stage and create something truly unique. Annabelle Holland Design created a bespoke, temperature controlled, glass walled wine room, with herringbone wine racks to mirror the herringbone flooring. The room created a divider between the hall and the open plan kitchen and dining room – literally placing the wine collection at the centre of the entertaining spaces. The glass walls also allowed light through into the otherwise dark hall and created views from the hall into the garden through the wine room – which were the other two key requirements of the design brief.

The previous arrangement of the house did not make the most of the property, rooms were small, dark and each room felt like an add on to the next as developers added to it over the years. Annabelle Holland Design formulated a new layout for the property so that each space flowed into another seamlessly. The home is now flooded with natural light and there is a perfect combination of open plan entertaining spaces and more intimate family rooms.
