Congratulations to Vignette Design who has been shortlisted for the Bathroom category in the International Design & Architecture Awards 2019

design et al are delighted to announce that Vignette Design has been shortlisted for the Bathroom category in the International Design & Architecture Awards 2019

The clients, an executive couple that travel frequently and enjoy spa type services, enlisted Vignette Design to renovate their Master Suit. The vision was to create the function of a spa in their bathroom, but with a bold and elegant feel.  The client wanted to improve the functionality of the space and provide ample storage for bathroom amenities. The client described to Vignette Design the overall feel of what they wanted: elegant but not too stuffy, bold but still warm, transitional styling with some traditional details – an elegantly comforting space. In addition, the client requested low VOC paint, adhesives and product wherever possible.

They also wanted the majority of product sourced locally within Canada. Vignette Design was to coordinate the full design, ordering of product and deliveries, management of trades, and manage all installations. The final finish selections were made to reflect the organic yet elegant feel the client desired. 8 large slabs of book-matched marble wrap the steam shower, interior bench and west wall of the bathroom, and provide an elegant border detail to frame the intricate marble mosaic inlay flooring. Gently curved polished nickel hardware and faucets drop a hint to tradition, together with the raised panel cabinetry design. The oversized soaker bath, complete with air jets is elegantly framed by the crystal chandelier allowing for a beautiful focal point on the south side of the room.

The organic movement of marble slab veining against the delicate, stringent weave of the mosaic floor, complete with crisp polished nickel inlay, creates a wonderful juxtaposition of flow and restriction which presents an overall complimentary tension in the room. The challenge in this larger scale bathroom was to find the delicate balance of boldness yet maintain a warm and welcoming space to find solace at the end of a busy day. The balance of organic materials versus decorative details created a warmth but maintained the overall flow and elegance of the home.  Aside from the visual appeal, the layout of the larger scale steam shower, deep soaker bathtub, generous vanity and armoire created a highly functional space.

With a large south facing window, this bathroom streams with sunlight and a view of the tall trees in the rear garden.  The earthy, warm tones that wrap the wall can be reflected in the array of trees seen through the window, as well as the taupe exterior of the home.  The contrast of the lighter floors and airy open space allows for the bathroom to feel light and open even on our greyest winter days.
