design et al are delighted to announce that Wilkinson Beven Design have won the Residential Swimming Pool Award within The International Design and Architecture Awards 2017.
Luxury new build Ski chalet in the French Alps, with basement swimming pool and spa facility. This private residential basement spa facility required an element of surprise; a space filled with light, crisp white finishes, and opulent accent materials, which create an exciting entertainment and relaxation space with gym, sauna, steam room, Jacuzzi and large infinity edged swimming pool. Tasked to resolve interior layouts maximising spa facilities while creating a pool that swimmers can use alongside family fun. Wilkinson Beven Design’s architectural approach allowed this basement space to be analysed providing facilities that function before dressing it in a palette of luxury materials.
Design, selection of finishes and detailing are all equally important roles in the creative process for Wilkinson Beven Design’s spa and swimming pool projects, helping to define facilities in which relaxation is central to the brief. Colour, mood and the use of lighting are all essential elements that combine to create precisely the right environments for their clients. Whether this be the ‘Zen’ calm of a massage suite, or the softly lit space of a black and gold mosaic-lined steam room, Wilkinson Beven Design’s team strives to create exciting surroundings for serious relaxation pursuits!
The subtle and restrained use of gold tile detailing, along with framed feature walls, add an opulence to the lighter palette, creating dazzles and reflections of soft, warm light. There is also a play of textures, with the tactile surfaces of cut natural stones contrasting with finer wall and flooring finishes. The large pool, formed in Carrera tiles, provided a means to split and separate the internal space, maximising relaxation areas and connecting facilities with a ‘floating’ dark, stone bridge.
Resolving the internal layouts allowed Wilkinson Beven Design to maximise interior facilities, with the pool in a central location water spans the complete basement width with a walkway across the raised infinity edge pool. Luxury Carrera marble encapsulates the pool and floor area complemented by mountainous textures of white sawn cut quartz, remaining walls are clad with graduated white and gold Bisazza mosaic adding warmth. Wilkinson Beven Design’s initial space planning links all facilities making the space flow to and from the main pool. The swimming pool facility provided a full home spa experience within a private ski chalet the use of light marble materials and textures provided a luxury, light, crisp interior feel making this basement feel spacious. The fresh white tone complemented and contrasted the darker timber hues used elsewhere within the property giving the element of surprise.
