My name is Will Gonell, principal of Gonell Homes Inc. A Toronto-based Custom Home and Renovation company whose work has been recognized and awarded nationally and internationally.  I am both a retired New York City Police Officer and a Sergeant in the United States Marine Corps.  My unique background provides a blend of discipline, precision, diligence and accountability, distinguishing him in the industry. 10 years ago, I decided to invest in my passion for building and have never looked back.  Since then, Gonell Homes has partnered with clients throughout Ontario, winning awards across a spectrum of specializations, including historical restorations, generational builds, green-building, and ICFs (Insulated Concrete Forms). I have a strong commitment to helping people in both the U.S. and Canada; as a program advisor at George Brown College and a board member of RenoMark, a division of BILD (Building Industry and Land Development).  Gonell Homes Inc. is also a member of the NAHB (National Association of Home Builders, NKBA (National Kitchen and Bath Association, CHBA (Canadian Home Builder Association, and a registered Tarion builder.

How would you describe your personal design style?  I would describe my design style and those of my projects as transitional. Traditional base while adaptive to a contemporary feel.

Where does your design inspiration come from? The inspiration for any project comes from the feedback and style of the clients. This information, along with my personal touch transforms into something special.

In what direction do you feel that design is moving towards in a general sense? Life has a funny way of altering our plans. Being a residential builder at heart, I have been fortunate to be transcending into a commercial application of my vision.

Name five key themes to consider when approaching design in 2019 and beyond. Some things to consider in 2019 are clean architectural lines, living in place considerations, international building guidelines, Large window/Door openings, and very detailed overhangs.

If you could offer one piece of advice when it comes to design schemes, what would it be? Design is meant to bold at times and yet unique to the individual.

How important are The International Design & Architecture Awards? This award is very important in getting international recognition from peers and other potential clients.

What projects are you currently working on? Currently, I am finishing a few home renovations as well as working on a contemporary commercial project.

What are your aims and goals for the next twelve months? Over the next couple of months, I will continue expanding into the commercial space.
