The Wimbledon House by Kitchens by Holloways

Kitchens by Holloways have been shortlisted for Kitchen Design Over £50,000 Award in The International Design and Architecture Awards 2021.

Kitchens by Holloways were approached by the client to completely redesign their terraced house backing onto Wimbledon Lawn Tennis Club within the beautiful surroundings of Wimbledon Park. The client is a keen tennis player and enthusiast. The key elements of the brief were to create a family home which would also serve as a great entertaining space for friends and family.

The Kitchens by Holloways philosophy is to make the kitchen the heart of the home, and that approach is reflected in the final layout of the ground floor. Interior walls have been removed to enable a prominent central positioning for a kitchen island. This helps to define the flow and use of space, from the open dining and living area in front of the island, the entertainment space to one side of the island, and the prep kitchen/scullery behind the island.

The cabinet doors and drawers are wrapped in patinated blackened brass with handmade recessed handles on the tall cabinets. The green colour was developed uniquely for this project. The Carrara marble centrepiece is designed for impact and elegance. Kitchens by Holloways purposefully kept it clear of accessories or appliances. The flush induction hob almost blends away onto the adjacent marble recess, where the Carrara marble surround and splashback provide a strong and striking architectural focal point.

Moving into the back prep kitchen/scullery, there is a slight change in materials to acknowledge the change in function for this space. The worktop transitions from marble to a solid hard wearing Zimbabwe black granite with a brushed and textured finish, complemented by blackened oak cabinets. Within the well-positioned breakfast bar with retractable doors, the solid oak interiors reveal a delicate bespoke handle detail. This unit conceals the kitchen essentials that normally clutter kitchen work surfaces, and also doubles as a dedicated bar area when entertaining.

The modern and streamlined structure of this kitchen is softened by the choice of materials used in the worktops, flooring, and bespoke cabinets. The new layout and design create flexible connections between spaces and maximises natural light throughout the ground floor. The kitchen, dining, living and entertaining spaces have defined zones, but these subtly flow together, with the kitchen providing the focal point – visually and socially.
