“Only one Nanjing city writes half of the history of the Republican China”. Once as the capital of the Republic of China, Nanjing is deeply marked with the culture of Republican China from different aspects. Due to Nanjing Golden Eagle International Hotel locating in this ancient city, YANG select Nanjing’s most representative culture of Republican China as the design background, depict the story of “saving the country by engaging in the industry” of the renowned textile entrepreneur Chang Chien (Zhang Jian) as the narrative, and integrate architecture, cultures and humanity character of the Republican China to create one cosmopolitan business hotel with Republican China touches.
The combination of the antique bronze tone with metal materials sets the tone of strong industrial style for the hotel space and symbolizes the strong patriotism and open-minded attitude towards new things in the Republican Period. Old-looking metal art wall behind the reception desk in the lobby together with metal antique curio wall down from the ceiling highlights the spatial view. The display of literature books, cloth weaving, typewriters, phonographs and others showcases sense of old times, and let people travel through time to return to the Republican Period.
The architecture of the Republic of China is the product of Chinese and western cultural convergence, and the essence of the Republican China. YANG applies the window lattice-the icon of architecture, vintage stained glass, mosaic floor and so on, and adopt the modern design language to reconstruct the hotel space and awake the special memory of the Republican China in the mind. The guestroom design incorporates the element of Brandebourg frag closing of cheongsam, the signature dress of the Republic of China, and arrays such element in the bed background wall in an orderly way, and displays together with the carefully chosen antique decoration such as mail box, pendulum clock, etc. and modern decoration materials with rich texture so as to create elegant and chic living ambience.
Designers have the objects in the space to correspond to history. Images of stacking luggage in the space represent people going around harboring the ideals of national salvation. Old posters, vintage paintings and black-and-white movies played by LED depict the retrospective social life and customs and remind people of the old memories.Incorporating the tradition into the modernity, and narrating the past through the space, Nanjing Golden Eagle International Hotel makes it accessible for everyone to feel and touch the memory of the history and to have their complex of the Republican period better accommodated.
