AMC Design have been shortlisted for Interior Design Scheme – UK Award in The International Design & Architecture Awards 2020.
This five-bedroom, two reception room, Edwardian home was set in beautiful mature gardens on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales but had not been touched in over 40 years. The brief was to create a sociable, family home for the clients and their teenage children, which respected the house’s character, while making it suitable for 21st century family life. Space for family to stay was paramount, as well as regular gatherings with friends for this convivial family.
The basement was tanked, and new windows and bi fold doors installed to make the home cinema, bar, shower room and changing room for the pool outside. The low ceiling height in the basement could not be altered, so became a virtue by creating a cosy cinema for family movie nights and the adjoining bar. The family love to host parties so a bar was always central to the brief. Antiqued mirror behind the bespoke brass glass storage unit ensured that light was bounced around, while creating an inviting space to socialise.
Cooking and socialising were the focus for the kitchen. By knocking down the wall to the dining room and removing a very old AGA, the kitchen was opened up, creating an open plan kitchen, dining and seating area. The contemporary slab kitchen was enhanced by brushed gold trim and kickboards to tie in with the boiling water taps and the light fittings.
The goal for the master suite was to have a sanctuary for the homeowners, with plenty of storage. This haven was created by changing a small bedroom into an en suite, which was ample to allow a free-standing bath under the window, with view of the moors beyond. The teal fan tiles reflect the colours of the Kit Miles wallpaper in the adjoining master bedroom, which has a generous dressing room.
AMC Design believe that the design works so well because it’s cohesive and hangs together throughout the house, although each room has a distinct personality, the whole works as a cohesive scheme.
